We welcome responsible dog owners to the Green Scythe Fair. To ensure everyone –
including dogs – has a safe and enjoyable experience, we ask all dog owners to follow these

Your Responsibilities
Registration & Identification
 All dogs must be registered on arrival and wear a GSF-issued tag with your contact
number
 Keep your dog on a short lead (maximum 2 metres, non-extendable), held by you, at
all times
Health & Hygiene
 Pick up after your dog immediately - we will provide you with 2 waste bags on entry
and more are available at the gates, info tent and from stewards
 Do not leave your dog unattended anywhere on site
 Do not leave your dog in your vehicle UNLESS a) it’s used to it, b) windows are open
for ventilation, c) it has water
Behaviour 
Your dog must not:
 Be allowed to roam freely
 Show aggression towards people or other animals
 Cause distress or fear in others
 Be allowed to approach others without their permission

Come and learn how to restore old English scythe blades as we take you through
how to transform old rusty blades and wood wormed snaths into functioning tools.
We will cover:
- blade construction and history
- Restoring an old blade (including Grinding and tang setting Demo)
- Discussion on traditional snath designs
NB: this workshop is designed to demonstrate the restoration of old blades
and snaths rather than providing a restoration service.

During this two-hour workshop, we will take a deep dive into what makes our hedges so special. We’ll discover their ancient origins, uncover the reasons behind their incredible biodiversity, and understand how to care for them going forward. The Westcountry boasts the densest, oldest and best-preserved hedge network in the world, with many dating from medieval times and some reaching back 5,000 years.  They are wildlife havens and highways, edge environments that provide habitat for a staggering array of plants, animals and fungi.  But they are ultimately human-made structures that require management, and we will look together at how this can be done sensitively, from laying and bank repair to coppicing and trimming, in order to preserve these wonderful boundaries for centuries to come.  Whether you are a gardener, landworker, smallholder, farmer or estate owner, understanding the value and character of our ancient hedges is vital to a sustainable future.

Sean is the author of the best selling book 'Sharp' and on this workshop you will learn how to sharpen edge tools, ranging from garden tools, hooks, shears and etcetera, to fine woodworking tools, chisels and knives or other craft tools.  Sean will teach the theory and practice of perfect edge geometry and what abrasives to use. You will have the opportunity to use a variety of hand and mechanical sharpening aids and equipment including abrasives, to learn what is best for which job. Go home with sharp tools and lots of knowledge of how to keep your tools sharp at home.  Bring a selection of tools to sharpen. If you do not get to sharpen them all in the time available, you will be advised on how best to do so at home.

This workshop aims to present and discuss the pivotal role of the scythe in habitat management for
wildlife.
Scythes and people together are potentially a keystone element in developing and maintaining
heathy ecosystems. ‘No Mow’ and Rewilding campaigns of recent years may seem to suggest
otherwise. We will discuss how practically the different strategies do work together.
Richard is a Botanist, Ecologist and Seedsman and will present the session based on his 40 years’
experience promoting the creation and maintenance of wild flower meadows. He is also Chair of the
Scythe Association.

The People's Emergency Briefing is a new film from the National Emergency Briefing, a public information initiative to ensure the UK is clearly and honestly briefed on the climate and nature crisis.  Building on the landmark National Emergency Briefing held in Westminster, the film features footage from the event with reactions from members of the public and some more familiar faces. The screening of the 45-minute film will be followed by a structured discussion.
